Youtube Auto-Captioning (Transcribe what I’m saying!)

Today Youtube rolled out a new feature: automatic captioning! Youtube is using Google’s speech-recognition technology to automatically transcribe what I’m saying and display it as a closed caption in the bottom third of the screen. Best of all, you can translate what I’m saying into virtually any language!

So how does this work? In the bottom right-hand side of the player there is a button with an “up” arrow (make sure you’ve started playing the video). If you hover over it with your mouse some additional options will pop up. One of these options reads “cc” with an arrow next to it. Hover over the arrow and a “transcribe audio” option will appear. Once you’ve transcribed the audio, you can repeat the process to translate what I’m saying into another language.

Google’s speech-recognition technology does an OK job of translating what I’m saying. Some words are way off… but maybe I’m not enunciating properly =)

You can try this new feature out on the video below –

Some of these are ridiculously translated. I mean some i can see why they may have thought other wise but never did you say “steel” or “poem”. Google Beta Fail.

Haha. There's definitely some progress to be made but I still think the feature is pretty cool.

This is ridicuously funny.

The eastern for gingrich is where your steel plant/he'll pat and your index knuckle (part of the poem) is resting on the third battle/babble/third of Babel….

I love the voice function on google translate as well. It is fuckin hilarious…or should I say “he'll laugh at us”?

Agree: it's hysterical.

Next let's see how that word salad gets translated into French or another language. Hoo boy.

Isn't closed captioning on TV based on speech recognition? That has some howlers, but far fewer. What software do they use?

I love it!

But Will, why do you talk so much about battles? I thought you were a tennis coach and not an adviser on war with a love for poems! I'm so disappointed!

Well I'm trying to branch out =)

How will these instructions help those who don't know English? Those who do know English don't need these instructions.
