Kick Serve Progressions – Step 4 – Full Kick Serve

WHERE’S THE VIDEO?!?!
This video is available if you sign up for our newsletter. Don’t worry — it’s 100% FREE!

Also send me FYB’s 100% FREE 45 minute email course. Over 3 days we look at the forehands of Federer, Nadal, and other top pros and compare them to real-life amateur players to figure out exactly what the amateurs — and you — need to do to improve.

The fourth and final progression of the kick serve is to move all the way back to the baseline and try hitting with the abbreviated motion from the previous videos. Once you master that, then you can try to hit using a full service motion.

In the first clip I’m all the way back at the baseline. Also, I’m holding the tennis racket at the bottom of the handle. So a “normal” serve grip. I’m still not going after the ball too much. I’m still working the technique and making sure I can get the ball in (very) consistently.

Once I’ve locked down the abbreviated motion, I can hit with a full motion. The mechanics of this shot will resemble the mechanics we laid out in the serve progressions section of the website. For example, I don’t use too much knee bend. Again, the main differences are the swing direction, pronation, and follow through.

Finally, to demonstrate the efficacy of this kicker motion I serve to Adam. I continue to swing at a moderate speed. My kick serve bounces about 6 feet in the air (Adam is 6’2”). Most players won’t be able to do too much (or anything) with this serve.

Come inside and play like you have an unfair advantage.

    I also have a question:

If I am trying to serve a kicker on the deuce side , do I really have to brush the from 7 to 1? I mean how will the ball even get near the box xD! Or will it go in because of the shoulder turn?

I have a question, guys: Im learning the kick serve and im noticing that when i hit the ball, it always gets over the net easily, but it always spins to my left, when I was told that if i hit it correct it would actually spin to my right.. Am I hitting the wrong type of serve?
  • no, ur doing an american twist serve, where the ball spins the other way
  • corey
i believe it should spin in the air like a slice but then on the bounce kick to the opposite direction
  • this looks harder than it seems although i dont get one thing... how on earth can you hit it with so much speed, always when i do a kick serve it goes maybe 15-20mph and 10 feet above the net
  • finally i can hit a kick serve :) took me 3-4 months :(

I wonder if you would show how to hit an American Twist serve. I've been trying to put a lot of spin into my kick serve to turn it into an American Twist. However, it always ends up being a kick serve. "o.o"

American Twist? - sounds like a drink to me. A 'twist' serve is basically the same. Rather than just dipping down, then kicking up, it kicks to the side too (and if you get really good at it you'll get it to dip and curl left before it hicks high and right (assuming that you are a righty). If you're brushing the ball from 7 to 1, or 8 to 2 (which you should be) you will start to get some sideways 'twist' anyway.

I did not understand the difference between slice and kick serve.
Could you explain it to me?
  • a slice serve is a serve that curves left for a right hander, and a kick serve is a serve that has topspin on it and is more consistent than all/most other serves

Great videos. Really love the site and I hope it does well. I'd recommend a login section (maybe I'm just missing it) so you don't have to enter your email address every time you leave a comment or want to watch a new video.

How do I get more bite on my kick serve? Since I learned it, I seldom double
fault(something your double partners despise). But even if I play with my 70 y/o C player friend, he has no trouble returning it. Maybe because I go from
    6 to 12?
