The technique for returning a serve to the backhand is essentially the same as the forehand return technique. Starting at 15 seconds in the video, I talk through my backhand return. Starting in the ready position, I take that one step we’ve been talking about and then hit my split step. Once I hit my split, I step out with my outside foot (my right foot because I am left handed) and diagonally into the court. Also, I turn my shoulders sideways and take my tennis racket back with an abbreviate backswing. I then step across my body with my inside foot — putting me in a closed stance — and I swing and hit the tennis ball.
