Two Up, Two Back — Washington Kastles Practice

Two Up, Two Back is one of my favorite doubles drills. It’s something I learned in college and have been doing ever since.

The game is pretty simple. One team starts at the net and the other starts at the baseline. In this instance, Murphy Jensen is feeding the ball into play (normally the net team feeds the ball). First team to reach a certain number of point (i.e. 7 points… or 9 points… or 11 points, etc.) wins. The teams then switch… the net team moves back to the baseline and the baseline team moves up to net.

Two Up, Two Back is one of the best doubles drills around. Not only does the game get you hitting a lot of volleys and passing shots but also it simulates typical match situations… one team at net and the other at the baseline.

One other VERY IMPORTANT thing to highlight. Notice how the net team keeps closing after each shot. That’s key. Typically, the first few volleys should be played deep down the middle of the court. Once you get close enough to the net, then you can go for an angle volley and try to end the point.

Will I absolutely love this. The footage you have of pros hitting between matches tournaments is great. But drilling and training is another beast altogether. Being a tennis coach myself, I would find any further footage or information of this kind really interesting. Also surprising to see how late/junk some of Serena's volleys were.

Why is Serena playing left-handed?
