thanks for this video!!! i've been trying to hit my forehand like Federer so i even changed my grip to eastern haha. and i thought Federer uses windshield wiper style but why does it look different and it doesn't look like he's hitting beneath the ball instaed he hits the ball flat and put weird spin during his process lol. what is this? And thanks for helping!!
  • dreamer
fantastic guys i really want to improve my forehand. i generate power but it takes effort. im sure seeing the best forehand will help me to hit a topspin forehand and not flat. at the moment im stuggling to generate spin and hit low, flat and hard, if could hit with spin and generate power as federer does, it wud be amazing a huge leap in my game. thanks for helping :)

Any idea how Fed has his racquet set up? Weight and string tension? He sure hits the ball off the end of his racquet sometimes... yet he still powers through it. My guess is heavy as heck and low tension, but that's just a guess. And, so much for the "keep your wrist below the racquet head" 70's era Vic Braden type advice!! Hehehe.

  • JFB
    Hi Will and Adam,
You are doing a amazing good job explaining tennis.
    Please stay that way!
I really enjoyed lately your live webcourse on Premium. That's a great input with a lot of feedback for you and us users. Even the many questions/interruptions of Adam were to the point and reflected lots of my simultaneous thoughts. So this 'bi-cephalic' live show is really full of information.
More regular input like that will keep the Premium users subscribed as I plan to do.
Just a thought: I am still wondering about the utility of a description of the benefits of the amount of string tension upon the accuracy/reproductibility of the shots and the maximum power available for a same racket.
  • Hey JFB,

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it -- We plan on making it a central part of FYB Premium. Had to Google bicephalic =)

We're going to do some equipment / gear stuff at some point but we're not 100% sure how we want to construct it yet. The book I mentioned during the webcast -- The Physics and Technology of Tennis (Brody, Cross, Lindsey) -- has a really comprehensive explanation of racket technologies / strings / etc.

    hey Will,

I have improved my game quite significantly after going through your videos. Thanks a lot. I also tried the FYB premium for 4 months. But one shot I have lot of trouble is changing direction on forehand (going down the line in a cross-court to cross-court rally). I waiting for this specific tip to be added to FYB premium before subscribing again. Any plans ?

I think for experts like you changing direction might be so natural and obvious that its hard to explain how to do it. but I have seen you teach even finer details.. so hopefully you can help me out here.. :)

And one other shot I have trouble is the short balls in the middle of the court. I know, I should convert such balls to sure-short winners..but I think the swing has to be a little different to hit such balls hard and keep it inside the court. 99% of the time I end up hitting it long.. Is this something you can consider for FYB premium too ?

    -Santhosh.

iam a New Tennis Player , Just Started 3 Months Ago
cause of your Free Lesson i have Done a Great Progress in my training.. My Coutch Dosn't Believe it
i would like to know what FYB Premium include
  • Hey. FYB Premium includes both technical instruction (how to hit a windshield-wiper forehand, for example) and strategy. Playing winning tennis is about more than how well you hit the ball. Good players also know where to hit each shot -- what's high-percentage, what's low-percentage, and so on.

Let me know if you have any specific Qs about the service.

    Great site!
  • Mr Quebec
Watching your videos i nthe e-mail course, I thought that I'd be wasting my time from the first video; it seems to be so obvious tips and such that I was seeing myself doing all them quite right already.

Turns out that in the very last of your video, I found there was one thing missing: my non-hitting arm wasn't extend in front of me parrallel to the baseline - I was plus or less pointing the ball instead.

Doesn't seem a big adjustment, but it indeed affects the rotation and it's an other load of easily gained energy that was left behind. The forehand was alreayd impressivly heavy, now it's going to get ugly!

Nice website: I have learnt many things - details and general - on striking the ball and it changed my game entirely and it continues to do so.
  • Hi Mr. Quebec,

Glad to help! Small adjustments sometimes result in big improvements, particularly when that small change results in your ability to better execute a technical element that's really, really important.

Love the sight. Couple of things.

Firstly I have not been sent your tutorial email on forehand. I have tried a few times but not receiving it. Can you help me out? cheers

Also I am a tennis coach myself. I have bout Casio fh20, which does pretty decent slow motion video. Can you tell me which settings you use? (number of FPS etc........... )

Also just wondering if you can recommend any fairly cheap software which is good for comparing pros shots to the players you are trying to help. I have heard of silicon coach and Motion picture and darkfish. Any recommendations?

    Kepp up the great work.

    Cheers Happy Gilmour

hi..... i live in N.Ireland which means it rains all the time and i don't get to practice I usually practice in the summer. I've noticed that my performance standard has incredibly been lowered....do you think that me not practising often is affecting my performance?
  • Roy125
    Hey Will,

I love the easy access to the instructional videos of this site. It's really transformed my game and put it to another level. It shows me the basics on how to do strokes and serves and everything in between. However, I would like a video on how to do a drop shot and a topspin lob. Going Hingis-style during matches would be fun!
  • Thanks Roy. Glad to help! We've got the drop shot queued up. Hopefully will have it out in a month or so.
  • fedexpress
    very great!haha
  • Andrew Park
    Will,

I really love the job you're doing with the site, it's been helping me a lot with my game! I was wondering if you could maybe do a video on different strategies, like the serve and volley, or counterpunching, and talk about the keys to them?

Thanks and keep up the fantastic work!
  • Grant
    Hi, Will

I have been viewing your website for about a year and my game has improved dramatically. I started playing tennis in college and I have never worked with a pro in person. I am a teacher and will be coaching the varsity tennis team this year for the first time. The team is inexperienced so I need to teach the fundamentals (which I planned on using your progressions). What order do you think I should build their strokes - forehand, backhand, serve, volley? I am also interested in film study of strokes, but we do not have any funding so I was wondering what equipment I could use to get started and any tips you may have. Lastly, I wanted some input on running a practice. I wanted to start with a dynamic stretching warm-up, drills on strokes and footwork, followed by static stretching. Once their strokes are fundamentally sound, I was going to work in some match play practice. Do you have any comments, tips, or drills that you could point me to for a team of 10 boys and 10 girls?

Any other reader, please feel free to give advice. Thanks Will! You are an excellent teacher and I truly appreciate your work.
  • Thanks Grant!

Your basic format seems fine -- start w/a warm up (running, stretching, etc.), have your players drill, and then play some points / matches. This last point is important because you want to get some "real" competition in there. If you simply drill during practice your players won't be match tough (mentally tough).

I would also throw in basic strategy. You're not going to be able to completely overhaul your players' strokes during the season. However, you can increase their chances of success by having them hit high-percentage shots most of the time. This is somewhat of a simplification, but if you tell them to keep the ball crosscourt and rarely try to change direction of the ball (in other words, hit down the line) they'll have a sound strategic framework. I'd emphasize that "trying to hit away from your opponent" is a big mistake because it can lead to low-percentage shots.

Let me know if you have any other Qs.

    Cheers,

    Will

I would love to see you keep progressing in teh production of your videos, they are much better now, but i still think that the board that you used has to go at some point, with new touchscreen technology you can create your own customized drag and drop icons that can simulate a better screen and insert videos on it, the editing of the video can be easier as you can also record what is on the screen. THe biggest advantage of it is, that you can draw lines, change colors and much more....my company does that, but you should look into it as it looks cooler.

    Will,

I would have to agree with Randy, I have an easy time getting spin even with my tight 18X20 string pattern on my Dunlop 300 tour but I do need help on not only hitting a flatter shot but also a deeper show, because of my spin I tend to hit short and sometimes its very easily attacked if its hit down the middle, thanks.

Yepp. Will is, of course, right as always (and he pays very good attention to details). Tennis is NOT like bicycling. It's not something you do equally well whenever you like. It needs maintenance and improvement, on a regular basis. If you stay away for 3 weeks, you basically need 2-3 weeks (at least) to get back on track. As a basic rule, leave time = getting back time. Tennis is all about confidence, and confidence is built while playing and training. I think that pretty much sums up it all - it's really not a bigger mystery than that (and having the right kind of practice of course).

    Hello to all tennis players.

I would like to buy some of the tennis ball machine for my self just to fill up the time when I can not find a partner. And I think it's also good for training. Does any of you have personal experience and can give me some good advice.
    Thank you
I am looking to spend around $1000,- on it.
  • Ted S
Hey Milan. I researched and agonized over what ball machine to buy. I ultimately decided on the Playmate Half Volley with the 2-line oscillation option. I am very happy with it. I ultimately chose it because it is a very reliable, well built machine, and it throws very good consistent balls. Most tennis clubs use Playmates (though usually more expensive versions). Other machines can give you more options for the same price or can give you the same options for less price. But from my research it seemed the additional options some machines provide (like lobster) were either not really that useful or didn't work well and the cheaper machines were less reliable and more prone to inconsistent ball throws.
  • Thomas
    Will,
I was wondering if you had any videos on the semi-western forehand grip
because that is the style i am accustumed too. It would be much appreciated for some feed back.
    Thank you.
  • kit
    Will,
Has anyone ever told you they keep on forgetting how to play tennis? Because for some reason, I keep on doing just that. I'm not saying that im like really really good but i can hit pretty well but sometimes it seems like i just forget how to hit (backhand, forehand, whatever) and it drives me crazy cuz these are the things i know how to do quite well. watching your vids has improved my tennis tremendously but after awhile i start to forget again.... it's weird, i think it may be the fact that i dont get motivated enough which makes me not move my feet fast enough therefore disrupting my footwork and kills my strokes? idk... any suggestions? thank you so much! you rock for doing this!
  • Hey Kit. Tennis, unfortunately, is not like riding a bike. If you don't play for awhile your skill set will diminish. The footwork in particular goes out the window pretty fast. There's not really a silver bullet for "re-learning" the game quickly.

Now if you're referring to a situation where you play regularly but your game sometimes gets worse... well, that sounds like you might not have fundamentally sound mechanics. If that's the case, the quality of your game will largely depend on whether or not "you're on" that day. My suggestion -- if that's the case -- is to really, really emphasize correct technique. That goes a long way toward preventing wild swings in how well you play.
  • Kevin
hope these video's will be awesome and help me improve my game! And its free fyb's speakin our language right internet?

Thanks so much for sharing this information. I am happy of how much i have learned from you guys...

    Cristian
  • Roei
    yea, i join Randy :)
also have to figure out a way to develop flat strokes.

    tnx
  • Randy
    Will,

I would like to see a video done on how to flatten out strokes. We've got plenty of instruction on hitting with top spin or slice, but how exactly do the biomechanics of forehands & backhands change to hit a flat hard shot?

    Thanks, Randy in Denver
  • dede
That's the reason why I learn my child to hit flat first, and than top-spin.
To learn topspin first can be very hard to make any hard shorts with enough speed in combination with spin. Now that she become 9 years I see that I saw it right. She is playing tennis for almost 5 years now and only the last 8 months she is practising with topspin,,,,,,oh god that's look very nice.
