Day 3 – The Amateurs’ Forehands
Let’s bring out our real-life amateurs. These guys all volunteered to be filmed and have their strokes critiqued online. Our first amateur player, Lucien, has been playing a few months and has joined a few leagues.
Our second amateur, John, is a club player who has been playing for several years.
The third amateur, Kevin, played in high school and is just now getting back into the game recreationally.
What we see is a direct correllation between the quality of their forehands and how many of the fundamentals they possess – and how consistenly they execute them.
The real key to what we see here is that what separated the pros from the amateurs was not small details like the angle of the wrist at contact or the type of follow through they used – it was something much larger: The pros do these five things, the amateurs do not.
In a way, this is great news. This should tell you that more than likely, the fastest way to improve your forehand is to immediately shift your focus to executing these five fundamentals we have outlined. As you begin to execute these steps and continue to improve the consistency and quality of your execution, you will see huge improvements in your game.
