Big news! Introducing FYB Premium

Next Wednesday at noon we’re opening the doors to FYB Premium. At the core of this subscription service is something we call the FYB System, which is a system for learning how to play better, winning tennis that is unlike anything else out there.

Check out the video for some details!

In case you were wondering, FYB Premium and the “High-Performance Coaching” section are the same thing. We’ve just renamed it.

We’ve answered some of the big questions you might have after the jump.

Q: Is FYB becoming a pay site?
A: FYB has hundreds of instructional videos that are, and will remain, 100% free. We plan on continuing to add tons of free content in the future. New strokes, new fitness videos, strategy, etc. Everything FYB has done for free in the past, it will continue to do for free in the future. The FYB System is an addition -on top- of the free content.

Q: So why isn’t the FYB Premium content free just like the stuff already on your site?
A: We couldn’t have developed this system if we weren’t going to charge something for it. It has taken a long, long time, many resources, and considerable expense to develop this service. Top coaches like 2008 USTA Developmental Coach of the Year Frank Salazar have offered their time and knowledge to help build this system into a truly comprehensive course for learning the game of tennis, from the basics of mechanics, timing, and footwork up to the most advanced strategies that pros are utilizing on tour today.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: Not an arm and a leg. FYB Premium costs about $25 per month, which is about half the price of a typical hour long tennis lesson you might take from a local pro. We think this is a fair price for the hours and hours of instructional content found inside the FYB System alone. We will offer a 90-day money back guarantee. We’ll give you three months to work your way through the system at your own pace, and that should give you plenty of time to know whether or not you are improving. If you don’t improve with the help of the System, we’ll give you your money back. We don’t want it if you’re not getting better… But you will :)

Q: How is the System structured?
A: The system is not a collection of more advanced tips that cover topics not already discussed on FYB.com. It is a tightly integrated, complete guide to playing winning tennis. The System itself is broken into “blocks,” which are analogous to chapters in a book. The first several blocks focus on things like stroke mechanics, footwork, ball judgment, timing, and working out the kinks in your technique. The next several blocks begin to formulate a strategy based around your technique, covering things like where to hit the ball and where to position yourself. These concepts are continually developed and improved upon as we introduce new technique. The goal is to present an approach to the whole game of tennis that gets you winning more games.

Q: I’m a beginner / weekend warrior / club player / competitive player. Will the system help me?
A: The system is designed to help people at any level. You can jump into – or out of – the system at any point and feel like you’ve learned something that will help you improve. In the later, most advanced blocks of the System, we will start talking about the complicated techniques and strategies that the pros are using. Even if you don’t have their technique, you’ll still understand what they’re doing the next time you watch.

If you have any further questions, please post them in the comments below, and we will amend this post to answer common or important ones.

FYB premium sounds like it could be useful, but I wish there were a way to sample the content before committing to the subscription fee, because it is not entirely clear how FYB Premium’s “blocks” will differ from, for example, the “Progressions” or, say, the breakdown of serve mechanics sections in the free content. Offering a free glimpse of FYB premium might attract more subscribers (hint, hint). Is there any plan to offer such a thing?

Hi IBH. The 90 day money back guarantee is there so you can get a full refund if you’re not happy w/the System.

We do a couple things differently in FYB Premium. First, we tell you when to learn / practice a particular technique. We don’t just say, “here’s the fundamentals of X shot and here are some progressions you can follow to learn it.” Rather, we introduce new techniques where appropriate — when you have the foundation / skills necessary to successfully hit that shot. Then we incorporate that shot into your strategy — expanding the strategic options you have at your disposal when you play a match.

For example, we teach the inside-out / inside-in forehand. But we don’t get to it until we’ve covered the fundamentals of the forehand (that foundation is necessary for all the modifications / upgrades in technique we’re going to be adding), fundamental movement, inside and outside groundstrokes, court geometry and court positioning, just to name a few things. Understanding all these concepts is important and necessary to learning how / when to hit an inside-out / inside-in forehand.

Why? First, because then you’ll know why it’s such a powerful shot. Second, we need some more sophisticated footwork patterns built on top of the fundamental movement we learned earlier. And so on. So hopefully through this example it becomes more clear how the FYB System builds on top of prior lessons — prior blocks — to get you playing better, winning tennis.

This System is NOT just about technique. It’s about strategy as well, because having an effective strategy can sometimes be more important than how you hit the ball. The most obvious example of this is the pusher — this type of player can be a nightmare for many club-level players simply because he uses a basic yet effective strategy — one that is so effective it overcomes the fact that the pusher has limited / incorrect technique (and yes, at the appropriate time, we do talk about / diagram how to beat a pusher).

i still dont want to pay 25 why not 15 or something isnt more people better than having 5 people paying

Hmm, for $40 I could have a 1hr lesson with a coach at the local club. For $120, I could have 1 lesson/ week for 2 months with a small group in an advanced doubles class – the price drops significantly if I opt for lower level classes. $25/month is a poor value for videos. Your explanations are detailed and articulate but videos won’t feed me balls or point out my mistakes.

Of course, I understand the need to monetize the website. I appreciate the free content and I was always happy to click on the ad links.

You’re right, videos won’t feed you balls. However, we do have an extensive list of drills in FYB Premium — footwork drills you can do by yourself, ball machine drills, drills you and a partner can do, and so on. And it’s not just an unorganized list of drills — at each step along the way in the FYB System we tell you when to practice each drill — that way you can practice a particular element of technique / strategy that is relevant to the area of the game we’re currently focusing on.

While we don’t point out your mistakes, we highlight / demonstrate some very common ones. That, of course, helps you identify errors in your own game. Later in the FYB System, this skill becomes more important because we use it to identify weaknesses in your opponent’s game. That helps us construct a winning strategy based around the type of player you’re facing.

Does the premium section have a “doubles” section

Will Hamilton August 27, 2009 at 6:14 pm

At the moment it does not. However, in the future it will.

$25 A MONTH is a lot for internet products. A one-time fee would be more enticing. I don’t play for lessons except when I feel I need them on occasion, not continuously. However, I will try your subscription to see if it is works it for me. Based on the free lessons I am very hopeful it will.

Mr.Feathers December 16, 2009 at 1:22 am

Hey Will, I was wondering if their was a way I could by a year’s worth of FYB and maybe get a little discount?

Will Hamilton December 16, 2009 at 1:08 pm

We’re going to get this option up again shortly. Email me at will@fuzzyyellowballs.com and I can provide you w/some more details. Thx!
