Andy Roddick vs. Marin Cilic — Australian Open / Quarterfinals

September 2, 2011

Andy Roddick faces Marin Cilic tonight in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The two have met twice before, with each player winning once.

Both Roddick and Cilic had tough, 5-set matches in the fourth round. Roddick overcame Fernando Gonzalez while Cilic out hit Juan Martin Del Potro. This quarterfinal match should be an entertaining affair. Both are playing at a high level. Roddick is serving the lights out. Cilic is hitting big off both the forehand and backhand wings.

As we discuss in the video, Cilic is in control of how close this match is going to be. If he plays to the level he’s capable of this will be a close match and he’ll have a shot to beat Roddick. Cilic has to take special care to capitalize on his break chances because he’s not going to get many of them. Gonzalez hit 83 winners against Roddick yet only had 4 break opportunities over 5 sets. Talk about protecting your serve!

We think Roddick is going to win in 5 and advance to the semis of the Australian Open, where he’ll face either Andy Murray or Rafael Nadal. What do you think?
