Steffi Graf did the golden slam too, if I remember correctly. And for the final, Djoko in 4 sets.
ahh the ole change of pace!!! Good call! I picked Joko in my racket bracket picks…only correct pick i think i made!!
Great video as always. Having been at Novak’s bronze medal match last year I think the crowd (which will be with Murray) could cause him trouble if he starts making errors, he lost that match, in my opinion, due to losing his temper over crowd noise. In fairness, the Olympic attitude isn’t to get the crowd quiet and at one stage I counted 5 people leave during a game with crying babies.
As for last year’s Wimbledon final, aside from the roof and Federer’s shot choices, what I think really changed in the latter part of the second set is Murray kept hitting the net on first serves to Federer’s backhand, which was working well in the first set. Fingers crossed he serves well tomorrow!
As for Jerzy Janowicz, this is pronounced Yehr-juh Yan-oh-vich. All BBC commentators seemed to get that wrong.
They are not lefties
I hope Novak wins and I think he is a better player, but that semi took a lot out of him and with the crowd against him, he will bow to Andy in 4.
His videos are very helpful and informative to beginners.
Keep the facial hair if you want to look like you’re in your 30s, shave it to look like you’re in your 20s…nice new hair btw
Steffi had the golden slam in a calendar year.
Nice analysis – I think Andy in 4 with some pretty lively home support making the difference. I think Andy will have a lights out 30 mins 3rd set that will prove decisive. I’d love the 8-6 in the 5th but think more likely a surprise blow out.
not a good idea to take sides
you need everyone!!!!!!! to be with you for future sales
Yea he gots racquets wrong way for da righties
I think he is trying to look over 14. Has to be tough when your 5’1″ tall
Good idea. However, Andy has to make sure the ball stays low and placed well so Novak just doesn’t jump on a short ball with all his court speed. Good prediction. I think Novak has better skills but I would love to see Andy win this one. His back has to be getting sore trying to carry Great Britain on his back.
slice back hand on the forehand of the opponent . OMG, it works from club level to top 5 ^^. if djokovic is not to tired i think he’ll win in 4 sets.
Can’t stand A Murray, what a brat, wimpy cry baby. Despite not deserving it he will win rather easily in a match as boring as the women’s final!
He already has given GB more than any player in the previous 90 years or so. Olympics took most of the pressure off
Andy CHOKES on the Big Match. Very typical Brit. Plus he’s a cry baby and has a negative atitude when things don’t go his way. Whah! Whah! Whah! I think the United Kingdom will have to wait a little longer for the Title.
Will_ I agree that slicing the ball low to the forehand and deep to the backhand would be effective but only if Andy takes care of both first and second serves. If he doubles more than once ..he certainly will lose.
This narrator is very annoying. You have to wait forever for him to say something worthwhile.
All that strategy is for sales. It’s all about who is sharp that day getting more first serves in, more depth on groundies and makes fewer unforced errors. Long tournament like this takes a great deal out of you mentally and physically as we saw with Lisicki. That semi with Del Potro may have done in Novak. Too bad because Andy is a schmuck.
Does he ever say anything worthwhile or just enough to fool newbies with more money than talent?
But he is a cute little boy. And his balls are so fuzzy.
No he didn’t – those aren’t racquets, as he has explained many times.
Do not mock him. I went from 20 to 14 on my clubs 1.5 ladder after buying his video.
Pretty ignorant comments Joe. But it would be nice if we had enough top brit tennis players that choking on big points (or anything else!) could be said to be a typical problem. Personally I am looking forward to seeing a pair of the best athletes in the world contest an amazing match. Maybe you and @Andysmom can keep each other company, and leave the rest of us to enjoy the tennis.
Nice analysis … hoping you’re right so we can watch UK go nuts (do they riot in the streets like the Super Bowl haha…) and I’m loving the facial hair
Not going to happen. Novak is too tough mentally. Andy will fold in the end after he gets zapped by too many great shots. it will be a servefest, but ND in the end in 4.
Interesting analysis as usual Will. You’re suggesting Andy mix in shorter balls from baseline rallies so he can then force Novak to play a more awkward defensive shot, and get a short ball himself. But Novak is pretty good at attacking the short ball himself. Isn’t giving Novak a short ball just handing over control of the point?
Pulling Djokovic in with a short slice is risky business, it can put him on the front foot by giving him more angles. You can’t just expect im to return that ball in a nice friendly way.
I would expect that’s true unless he can put enough spin on the ball and keep it low such that Djokovic can’t [at least easily] attack that kind of ball (spin moving it off the centre of the racket, height making it hard to hit topspin)…?
Which I guess means that a stage in the strategy is missing here… and that’s to push Novak back before pulling him in, make him rush to hit that short ball. I agree it would be stupid for Murray to try this method from a neutral position.
After this insulting remark, do you feel better, more superior?
good stuff … let’s just enjoy a GREAT match … I don’t like any facial hair – but it does look ok
Who serves best will win. Murray won his last match because he served better.
Novak in four.
Interesting analogy hope its a good match. interesting to see how the rh/bh side is a bit more worn away than the fh side on centre court, modern day tactics. Djokovic in four or five unless Murray gets pumped and gets the crowd behind him, then it’ll be really close. Facial hair looks good
Interesting analysis if the Joker does not put the short ball completely out of reach. Facial hair looks like you got up late in the morning and had to run out of the house quickly. Also looks like it would scratch in a clinch.
If the weather were not crazy in US open, Novak would beat Andy, Tomorrow, Novak will win in 4 sets.
Will I’m just wondering why you orient the racquets inverse of the way the player would make contact with the ball. Not that I want Joker to win, but btwn the ears he’s more sound. Joker in 4.
Like the analysis, think Andy will win in four. Will be fresher, has the home crowd, has his coach Lendyl who never one this one the only slam he didn’t. Think Andy will serve better put down more aces make less unforced errors.
Their backhands and serves are evenly matched,
I Think the difference is going to come down to who can hit aggressive forehands more consistently to take control of the points (although the play you are suggesting could definitely come into play)
I used to follow some basics from his site. then i noticed i am getting soliciting emails form him asking money and he talks too much for a simple learning. I dont go to his site anymore. I found lot better sites and advices else where, i.e: youtube.
Also if you really improve get a good coach. I mean a really good coach who knows latest tennis techniques/strengthening exercise etc.
Djoker in 4. He’s been playing better this tourney. Andy was down 2 sets to verdasco, for god’s sake. Andy would not have beaten delpo like djoker did.
Y in Lendl stand for why he explained that he did not do well at Wimbledon because he was allergic to grass while playing a round of golf.
Djokovic just wears people down. Andy must maintain his composure through the long points as they are tough to lose. Andy must accept that Novak will return what are normally winners and play for the next shot. If not, frustration will set in and he will lose.
Andy does the same and should be fresher and have the crowd to keep him going. Joker already was showing frustration with the crowd in the semi, this will be 10000 times worse. While Novak is the better player, mainly on mental toughness, this looks like a win for the Brit brat.
Novak will win. He is just too good, but I want Andy to win and break the streak.
Novak never seemed bothered by slice balls landing short in his court. I think if he gets a ball like that, he would blast a winner right by Andy down the line. Andy would have to come out with some extreme ball retrieving skill to surprise Novak and to beat him in 5 sets.
I think the difference in this match comes down to the Djokovic FH, it’s a bigger weapon and more versatile than Andy’s. Djokovic will move Andy from side to side early and then employ vertical tactics to open more angles later on. Even though Dkokovic has an excellent drop shot I don’t expect him to use it nearly as often as Jerzy did. Djokovic’s shot placement should be better in this match because he doesn’t have to deal with those sledgehammer FH’s of Del Potro. Andy is going to have to take some chances during the rallies or he won’t be able to apply enough pressure to Djokovic. More down the line shots from Andy, mix in a few serve more and volley points, chip and charge on occasion, go for some big FH’s to break up Djokovic’s rhythm. If Murray plays his normal match and Djokovic does not have an off day, I see Djokovic winning in 4 sets. If Murray changes tactics and plays a little more high risk he will either make more mistakes and lose anyway or he might just pull off a Huge Win. At least in the latter scenario I see Murray with a better opportunity to win. Murray needs to play his grind it out use his legs style for 85% of the match and 15% high risk. Right now he is playing closer to 95% grind it out and 5% high risk and that type of tennis will limit his opportunities to beat a player like Djokovic. Right now I would think Djokovic wins in either 4 or 5 sets depending on whether Murray wins the inevitable tie-breaker somewhere along the way.
Hot and dry and the ball is not going to skid like it would in other conditions. Good thoughts but I think going short to Djokovic fh will get him in trouble.
I think the difference will be the 4 hours Djokovic played in the semis and the home crowd.
Djokovic played an incredible match against Delpo. Delpo has a great serve and an awesome forehand (a huge weapon). Andy’s forehand does not even come close, especially when pulled wide. Aside from his serve, Andy does not have weapons against Djokovic. Djokovic will send a lot of balls to Andy’s forehand to get some easy points/unforced errors from Andy.
Andy is also mentally weak, especially when things don’t go his way and he is a choker.
Sending shorter slice balls to Djokovic’s forehand does not make any sense (Djokovic is super fast and his movement up and down the court is fine).
Djokovic in 3.
I liked your video and enjoy your analysis of tomorrow’s match.
I see a lot of players try drop shots to their opponent’s forehand, but it seems to backfire.
I think Murray is capable of winning but Djokovic is more likely to do so. (How’s that for a hedge?) I think victory will have more to do with the mental states of the players than with any analysis of relative skills.
I think Murray will start with a power game to try to capitalize on Djokovic.s tough semi-final. If Djockovic shows signs of tiring, Murray will mix in the drop shots. Murray, with the help of the crowd, in four or five sets.
Coin flip as you said. Depends on how they wake up tomorrow and/or who executes the strategy you shared the best. Pro beard. You need a little bit more mustache, though .
I hope they both collapse of heat exhaustion. No champion for 2013.
I say djokavic in 4…..6-3, 5-7 ,7-5, 6-4
I think the key is the first set. Look for djok to try to take the crowd out of it with a fast start, murray will be nervous at start of match, djok will win first set.
murray will calm down, but djok will apply pressure and force murray to go for too much, 2nd set to djok, crowd is neutralized.
murray may take a set from there but I don’t he’s coming back down two sets.
while I found Will’s analysis interesting, I think it’s much more likely djok will have looked at the federer strategy and give it a try. I’m sure Lendl will have andy prepared for this strategy by going a little bigger on the short slice.
I think Andy needs to start well and not miss too many forehands. He needs a long match which having had the easier semi could tip the scales. This is his best chance to win Wimbledon so it’s this year or never.
While both have magnificent defensive skills, I think Novak is better at converting defense to offense given his amazing agility which helps him to stay close to the baseline. He really does not offer any angles for Andy to exploit. Andy will have to dig very deep to stop Novak. Also, Novak is probably the best “reader” of a situation in the game today.
I’m hoping Andy because I’m British so really want to see him win.
I think Murray needs to be aggressive whenever possible.
how about stamina ? Andy should have a slight advantage (he played less in his semi) even though Novak had from Friday to recover ?
What about the net game? Is this even going to be a strategy for either one of them? I hope this isn’t 5 sets of 100% behind the baseline tennis. I know that both of these guys hit amazing passing shots regularly. However, I don’t want to see them blowing excellent opportunities to move to the net to win a point. I’m not saying that it’s easy, I just want to see them pick perfect moments to be aggressive as well.
I feel many of these great matches these days unfortunately come down to stamina, or even who can keep digging deep even though they are on the verge of literal exhaustion. I sometimes find it painful to watch. I blame it on the co-poly strings, which make it too easy for these players to retrieve balls. I think they should ban them.
Yay! Well done to Andy, he couldn’t believe it, could he? We only had to wait 77 years for it. The last 3 points were a nail biter.
Can’t win them all – I was way off on tactics. Really interesting match though, and awesome that Andy won! He put in some serious work the last year and earned the title.
Murray won his last match (against Janowicz) becasue he returned better, not served better. Janowicz couldn’t return with the same consistency, so Murray had more aces, but Murray contained the Janowicz serve exceptionally well. Defense wins out over offence.
Hey Will – Re facial hair – unless you’re moving to Brooklyn, or changing to a profession that doesn’t require a lot of clothes, I would lose the hair.
Great match for Andy. He has always played Djokovic tough so it was no
surprise. Andy served better and had fewer unforced errors. Also
notice that he didn’t go negative even when he made mistakes or got
broken. He was cooler than Djokovic. I credit Lendl with Murray’s
better attitude, and bigger serve and more aggressive forehand. And the
crowd certainly helped. A more consistent Djokovic probably would have pushed it to 5 sets but he was just a bit flat. Great job Andy.
completely DISAGREE. use the grizzly man-look from time to time. all Tennis players go a little rough sometimes. Tennis isn’t always about etiquette and tennis whites! Rock n Roll Agassi fun!
… Re: Wimby… I want to see a one hand backhander on at least ONE side in the final… hope Roger not the last for a while
no worries… was a really close 3 setter, doesn’t take WINNING a set for it to be close. you were BANG ON for the French Open!
Yes, MikeJ, I totally agree with you on all points.
I doubt my nerves would have coped with 5 sets!
True, nailed the FO prediction
Dimitrov may be the “one”
In an interview with John Isner, Will Hamilton said (in a sidebar) that he wished he had had a step ladder. Isner is listed at 6’9”; Hamilton claims 5’8″. But Isner looked about fourteen or fifteen inches taller. Does he underestimate his height? This is a friendly question. I would have wanted a step ladder too.
