Take the Racket Back

How To :

1. Use your arms to take the racket back.

2. Continue your shoulder turn until you are slightly further around than sideways to the net.

Pretty simple, right?

Figure 1: Frank taking his racket back

Once he completes his pivot and shoulder turn (again, that’s how he started to take the racket back – by turning his shoulders, not using his arms), now he uses his arms and his continued shoulder turn to get the racket all the way back and his shoulders turns a little more than sideways to the net. Also, take a look at his head. He’s keeping his head facing the net because he’s watching the ball. So while the rest of the body turns sideways his head stays facing the net.

Common Errors:

Turning too far / not turning enough.

You want to be slightly further around than sideways to the net – slightly. If you turn too far it will interfere with your forward swing. The same thing applies if you don’t turn far enough around.

Big loops in the backswing.

The two handed backhand backswing is much more compact than on the forehand side. What I mean by this is that the hands (not the racket) travel on a straighter path backward than on the forehand. The way you angle the tennis racket (look at Frank, he is angling the racket up a little) is different than the level at which you bring your hands back (his hands are moving almost straight back). Raising your hands too high is generally a mistake.
