Racket Back

How To :

1. Arms, as well as the continued shoulder turn, take the racket all the way back.

2. Angle the racket head up -- exact position not critically important.

Figure 1: Andrej taking the racket back

Having completed the PST and changed his grip, Andrej now uses his arms, as well as a continued shoulder turn, to take the racket all the way back. You’ll also notice that Andrej angles his racket head up.

Even though Andrej’s body is turning sideways, he keeps his head facing the net and his eyes fixed on the tennis ball.

The angle and direction the racket is pointing is not critical. If you look at the top one handed backhands on the pro tour, there is a lot of variety in how the racket is oriented. The one constant, however, is that the racket is angled up to some degree. In other words, there is some sort of loop in the backswing. That’s what you want to copy.

Common Errors:

Not having some sort of loop.

This makes it difficult to develop rhythm and timing. It also takes away some of the racket head speed you get from the momentum the loop creates.
